That sump pump hose draped across the lawn - most homeowners just live with it. It's an eyesore, it's a trip hazard, and every time a heavy rain rolls through, you're crossing your fingers it's doing its job. There's a better way.

What we do is route that discharge line underground with a properly installed drainage system. We trench it out, line it with filter fabric to keep soil from migrating in, bed the pipe in gravel, and tie it all together so water moves away from the home efficiently and out of sight. No more hose flopping around. No more guessing if water is actually going where it needs to go.

The filter fabric you see wrapping the trench is doing real work here. It keeps fine particles from clogging the system over time, which is one of the biggest reasons DIY drainage setups fail after a few seasons. The gravel bed around the pipe allows water to move freely while the fabric acts as a barrier against sediment. It's a detail that makes a big difference in how long the system holds up.

We also use plywood protection sheets during the job to protect the lawn from equipment and foot traffic as much as possible. The goal is to solve the drainage problem without wrecking the yard in the process. A surface drain inlet is tied in as well, so any standing water nearby has somewhere to go too.

Water problems around a home's foundation aren't something to put off. The longer water sits close to the structure, the more it works against you - in the basement, in the crawl space, and eventually in the foundation itself. A buried drainage system is one of the more straightforward fixes, and it's one we do right.
